St. James

1. Call to Apostleship

Biblical Reference: Matthew 4:18-20, Mark 1:16-18, John 1:35-42

Description: Andrew was a fisherman and the brother of Simon Peter. He was initially a disciple of John the Baptist and is noted for being one of the first to follow Jesus after John identified Him as the “Lamb of God.” Andrew then brought his brother Simon (Peter) to Jesus, telling him they had found the Messiah. Jesus called both Andrew and Peter to be His disciples, saying, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Biblical Reference: Mark 10:35-45, Matthew 20:20-28

Description: James and John, through their mother Salome, asked Jesus to grant them the honor of sitting at His right and left in His glory. Jesus responded by explaining the cost of such a request, speaking of the suffering and sacrifice required to follow Him.

Biblical Reference: Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-8, Luke 9:28-36

Description: James was one of the three apostles, along with Peter and John, who witnessed the Transfiguration of Jesus on a high mountain. During this event, Jesus’ appearance was transformed, and His face shone like the sun. Moses and Elijah appeared, talking with Jesus.

Description: According to tradition, after Pentecost, James preached the Gospel in various regions, including Judea and Samaria. Some traditions, especially in Spain, hold that James travelled to the Iberian Peninsula to spread Christianity, making him one of the earliest Christian missionaries to Europe.

Description: St. James was the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred. King Herod Agrippa I had James executed by the sword around 44 AD. His martyrdom is one of the few apostolic deaths recorded in the New Testament

Description: Several miracles are attributed to St. James during his missionary work. One notable miracle involves the healing of a paralyzed man. James prayed over him, and the man was miraculously healed, leading many to convert to Christianity. Another tradition speaks of James appearing to a pilgrim in need, providing guidance and comfort.
