Orthodox image of St.Geevarghese Mar Koorilose II

St. H.G. Geevarghese Mar Koorilose Kattumangattu, affectionately known as “Small Bava,” holds a revered place in the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church as the second bishop of the Thozhiyoor Church, consecrated in 1802. Born into the Kattumangattu family, his life was marked by miracles that underscored his sanctity. One notable miracle occurred during his tenure when he prayed for a barren woman, who soon conceived and bore a child, an event attributed to his intercession. Another account tells of a deadly plague ravaging his village; Koorilose’s prayers are said to have halted the disease, saving countless lives, with witnesses noting a divine light during his supplications.

His reputation for holiness grew after his death in 1809, buried at the Monastery of Saint Thomas in Vettikkal, where his tomb became a pilgrimage site. The faithful reported healings, including the restoration of sight to a blind man who prayed at his grave, and the relief of a child from a severe fever after his family invoked Small Bava’s name. These miracles, documented in local traditions, led the Thozhiyoor Church to venerate him as a saint, with his feast celebrated on May 28 and 29. His gentle demeanor and miraculous works earned him the endearing title “Small Bava,” reflecting his humble yet powerful spiritual legacy.
